Unlocking Potential Through Equine-Assisted Programming:
SMILES, Inc. and Wispact Foundation
The Wispact Foundation is committed to enriching the lives of individuals with disabilities across Wisconsin by supporting transformative programs that enhance accessibility and inclusion. One such recipient, SMILES, Inc., located in Darien, Wisconsin, is a shining example of how innovative approaches can make a profound difference. With the help of a Wispact Foundation Legacy Grant, SMILES is breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for people of all abilities through its equine-assisted programming.
Harnessing the Power of Equine-Assisted Programs
SMILES, Inc. offers equine-assisted programming that provides both physical and emotional benefits to individuals with disabilities. Their programs, supported by certified instructors, are designed to strengthen core muscles, build confidence, and promote emotional well-being.
“A horse connects with people on a completely different level,” explained Troy Moldenhauer, Executive Director of SMILES, Inc. “One of our clients began our program needing assistance to walk. Over time, she built strength and confidence. Now, she’s graduated from grad school, married, and walked down the aisle with just a cane. It’s truly remarkable.”
Beyond the physical benefits, SMILES’ programs address a spectrum of psycho-social disabilities, including anxiety, depression, and autism. Their unique approach has touched the lives of clients ranging in age from 4 to 85.
Breaking New Ground with “Books in a Barn”
A recent addition to SMILES’ offerings is the “Books in a Barn” literacy program. Clients read to a horse in a safe, nonjudgmental setting, fostering comfort and improving reading skills.
“The horses love it, and so do we,” said Troy. “It’s a simple yet powerful way to build confidence and connection.”
Keeping Programs Accessible
Thanks to the Wispact Foundation’s support, SMILES is able to keep their programming affordable through subsidies for Wisconsin residents. While clients do pay for services, the grant has been instrumental in funding scholarships for those who would otherwise be unable to participate.
“One of our long-time clients, faced losing her ability to ride after the county withdrew her funding,” Troy shared. “She came to us in tears. This program is what keeps her stable, mind, body, and spirit. Thanks to the Wispact grant, we were able to provide a scholarship, and she continues to ride. Her gratitude is boundless.”
SMILES is proud to offer some of the most reasonably priced equine-assisted programs in the Midwest. Their dedication to accessibility is further underscored by their international accreditation from PATH International, a premier certification for therapeutic riding programs.
Meeting Growing Demand
As demand for SMILES’ programs grows, so does the challenge of meeting the needs of the community. For the first time, the organization has a waiting list. To address this, SMILES is planning a capital campaign to expand their facilities, including the construction of a new barn.
“We want to offer programming to everyone who needs it,” Troy emphasized. “It’s disheartening to have a waiting list, but we’re committed to reducing it with this expansion.”
How You Can Help
Troy outlined three keyways to support SMILES:
Time: Volunteers are the lifeblood of SMILES. From grooming horses to office work, there’s a role for everyone.
Talent: Whether you’re an electrician, landscaper, or board member, your expertise can make a difference.
Treasure: Financial contributions directly support programs and help keep costs low for clients.
“As a nonprofit, we depend on the generosity of our community,” Troy said. “Every contribution makes a tangible impact.”
A Partnership That Transforms Lives
The partnership between Wispact Foundation and SMILES, Inc. is a testament to the power of collaboration. Together, they are unlocking potential and creating a more inclusive world.
“This work is so valuable,” Troy concluded. “We’re incredibly grateful to Wispact and all the individuals who support our mission. Thank you so much!”
