The Door County YMCA is more than just a gym—it’s a community hub where wellness, connection, and accessibility come together for people of all ages and abilities. Serving both year-round and seasonal residents in Door County, the YMCA has expanded its facilities and impact in recent years. A recent grant from the Wispact Foundation is helping the organization go even further by providing specialized fitness equipment that enhances accessibility and encourages healthy living.
Meeting Unique Community Needs
“We serve a lot of seniors and individuals with disabilities,” said Brett Cleveland, Mission Advancement Executive at Door County YMCA. “This grant helps us make sure our programming and equipment are accessible to everyone.”
Through Wispact support, the YMCA purchased four pieces of adaptive fitness equipment tailored to a wide range of physical abilities. These include upright cycles and upper body ergometers at both their Sturgeon Bay and Northern Door locations. The machines allow users to work out while seated or standing and are especially helpful for individuals recovering from strokes, living with disabilities, or working on upper body rehabilitation.
With the new equipment, participation and engagement have soared.”
Real People, Real Impact
The impact of the new equipment has been immediate and inspiring. Mary Claire McHugh, Healthy Living Executive shared stories of individuals making great strides in their recovery and fitness journeys:
• A woman in her early 60s recovering from a stroke is gaining upper body strength and confidence.
• A man in his 50s, injured in a motorcycle accident, is using the equipment to aid his recovery.
• Stacy, a young woman with special needs, has doubled her workout time and is thriving on the new machines. “She used to struggle with just 20 minutes on a recumbent bike,” explained Mary Claire. “Now she’s doing 40 minutes of aerobic activity and loving every minute of it. With the new equipment, participation and engagement have soared,.”
Bridging Healthcare and Community Wellness
The Door County YMCA also works closely with Door County Medical Center, creating a bridge between medical rehabilitation and independent wellness. Physical therapists often refer patients to the Y to continue their recovery, knowing they’ll have access to appropriate equipment and a supportive environment.
“This equipment gives people the ability to keep progressing even after form
al therapy ends,” Brett noted. “That continuity is critical for long-term health and independence.”
A Perfect Fit with Wispact
From the first inquiry to final implementation, Brett and Mary Claire found the Wispact Foundation to be a true partner in their mission.
“Their values align so well with ours,” Brett said. “The process was seamless, and we’re incredibly grateful for the support.”
