The Autism Society of Greater Wisconsin has long been a pillar of support, education, and advocacy for individuals with autism and their families. Serving 53 counties in Wisconsin, north of Milwaukee and Madison, the organization creates opportunities for connection and understanding. Thanks to a recent Wispact Foundation Legacy Grant, the Autism Society is amplifying its impact in extraordinary ways.

Creating an Inclusive Experience at the Annual Conference
One of the Autism Society’s most significant initiatives is its annual conference, a gathering that attracts nearly 1,000 attendees from across Wisconsin and beyond. This event is a cornerstone for education and community-building, offering valuable resources and insights for individuals with autism, their families, and professionals.

This year, the Wispact grant is providing scholarships to 15 autistic individuals, primarily adults, enabling them to attend the April conference. These scholarships cover registration fees and include travel stipends, removing financial barriers for those who might not otherwise be able to participate.
“It’s so powerful when we can give these scholarships to people who enhance the experience for everyone at the conference,” said Katie Hess, Executive Director of the Autism Society of Greater Wisconsin. “Their presence and positivity make the entire event better.”

Enhancing the Conference Experience
In addition to scholarships, the Wispact grant is funding sensory-friendly fidget tools for attendees. These simple, thoughtful gifts improve focus and comfort, making the conference a more enjoyable experience for everyone. “Our attendees really enjoy these little gifts,” Katie shared. “It’s just another way we can make the event more inclusive and accessible.”

Overcoming Challenges with Community Support
The Autism Society does not receive federal or state funding for its conference, relying instead on fundraising efforts to make the event possible. Katie emphasized the importance of the Wispact grant in enabling them to provide scholarships and enhance the experience for attendees.
“Without the Wispact grant, we couldn’t offer scholarships,” Katie explained. “Working with Wispact was wonderful—the application process was simple, and the staff was incredibly responsive and friendly.”

Building a Brighter Future
The Autism Society of Greater Wisconsin’s mission extends far beyond its annual conference. The organization supports a vast, mostly rural service area through volunteer-led chapters that host educational events and community-building activities. These chapters are essential for fostering a sense of belonging among individuals with autism and their families.
“We’re always looking for volunteers to help us spread love and expertise and build a stronger community,” Katie said. “And of course, we’re always in need of donors and board members to support our work.”

Katie also highlighted the importance of understanding and evolving perspectives on autism. “If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism. It’s a journey of continuous learning and growth as we work to create a world where everyone feels they belong.”

The partnership between Wispact Foundation and the Autism Society of Greater Wisconsin exemplifies the impact of thoughtful grantmaking. By supporting scholarships and enhancing the conference experience, Wispact is helping to create a more inclusive, supportive community for individuals with autism.
