The Blue Lotus Center is a sanctuary where individuals facing profound life challenges can connect with nature in a safe, welcoming, and accessible environment. Nestled on 64 acres of scenic land, the center provides therapeutic and recreational outdoor experiences designed to nurture both body and spirit. Thanks to the continued support of the Wispact Foundation, the Blue Lotus Center is making nature more accessible than ever.
Breaking Down Barriers to Outdoor Recreation
With two Wispact grants awarded this year, Blue Lotus is expanding its ability to serve individuals with disabilities by increasing accessibility and removing financial barriers.
“We were awarded two grants, our first grant allows us to partner with organizations that bring individuals to Blue Lotus at no charge,” explained Michael Larson, Executive Director of Blue Lotus Center. “Accessibility isn’t just an on-off switch—it’s something we continually improve, and these grants help us turn the dial up each year.”
The second grant has been used to establish the Wispact Accessibility Corner, an initiative that provides visitors with hiking poles, walking sticks, transfer chairs, and other assistive devices to ensure they can fully engage in outdoor experiences. “This allows people to try different equipment and pick what works best for them,” Michael shared. “It greatly enhances their outdoor experience and supports our mission to make nature accessible to everyone.”
Nature’s Healing Power
At Blue Lotus, outdoor activities go far beyond recreation—they are therapeutic. Canoeing, kayaking, pedal boating, and fishing are just a few of the offerings that empower individuals to participate in ways they might not have thought possible. The center also offers an accessible swimming pool with a wheelchair lift and a changing room designed to ensure dignity and ease of use.
“Swimming is particularly powerful because it levels the playing field,” Michael explained. “On land, mobility challenges might limit participation, but in water, buoyancy creates an equalizing effect. It’s an incredible experience for our guests.”
Additionally, the center features a variety of accessible swings, picnic areas, lawn games, and hiking trails—all designed to promote inclusion and engagement with nature.
A Welcoming Space for All
Scientific research continues to affirm the physical, emotional, and mental health benefits of spending time in nature. However, not everyone has equal access to the outdoors. Blue Lotus is committed to changing that by creating opportunities for people to experience nature without limitations.
“Last year, with the support of Wispact, we welcomed over 200 individuals who enjoyed everything from fishing to boating,” Michael noted. “Many of them were able to experience these activities for the first time, which is something truly special.”
The center’s approach extends beyond accessibility—it also prioritizes safety and comfort. Each group that visits enjoys private access to the property, ensuring a secure and stress-free environment tailored to their needs.
Supporting Blue Lotus
The impact of the Blue Lotus Center continues to grow, and there are many ways to support their mission. “We always need volunteers,” Michael said. “With 64 acres to maintain, there are opportunities for trail maintenance, gardening, and facility upkeep. We also need group hosts—people who assist guests with activities like fishing and boating.” Beyond volunteering, financial contributions help sustain and expand the center’s programs. Spreading the word about Blue Lotus is another powerful way to ensure more people can benefit from its offerings.
A Partnership That Transforms Lives
The collaboration between Wispact Foundation and the Blue Lotus Center exemplifies the power of thoughtful grantmaking. By providing essential resources and increasing accessibility, Wispact is helping to create a more inclusive outdoor experience for all.
Michael expressed deep gratitude for the partnership. “Working with Wispact has been a great experience. The grant process was straightforward, and their support has made a tangible impact on the people we serve. We look forward to continuing this relationship.”
